Another Food Meme

I got this a loong loong time ago and thought I'd post it now.  Better late than never :)

What is your first memory of baking/cooking on your own?

When I was a kid (around 6-7) and going to the beach every other weekend was the norm for our family, we usually would buy some clay flowerpots for my mom's garden at the numerous pot stands by the side of the road.  My sister and I would longingly look at the miniature clay cooking pans/pots, until my mom finally bought us a set.  We got home and excitedly decided to "cook".  Mom gave us some rice to cook, and showed us how to do it in the clay pot.  We also cooked a vegetable stew to eat with it.  My sister and I were so excited about the fluffy white rice and couldn't believe how quickly it cooked so we left it on a bit longer.  Of course, it burnt ;)

Who had the most influence on your cooking?

My mom and my maternal grandmother.  My grandmother made everything from scratch and had her own recipes, as well as heirloom recipes to pass on.  My mom is the same.  I'm getting there :)

Do you have an old photo as "evidence" of an early exposure to the culinary world and would you like to share it?

I don't think I do :D

Mageiricophobia - do you suffer from any cooking phobia, a dish that makes your palms sweat?

A good souffle, and cakes LOL

What would be your most valued or used kitchen gadgets and/or what was the biggest letdown?

Most valued --pots and pans

Biggest letdown -- the juicer

Name some funny or weird food combinations/dishes you really like - and probably no one else!

Hmm hard question.  Most of the people I've met here aren't too savvy food-wise and will probably find a lot of things I like to eat a bit funny or weird, whereas most people I know back home are more adventurous.  But a few have said yuck to rice with cheese, sushi-style without the nori.

What are the three eatables or dishes you simply can't live without?

I'm pretty basic (and easy! LOL):  roasted chicken, grilled fish/seafood (ok am cheating haha),  RICE!! (I don't eat it everyday, but can't give it up)

Your favorite ice-cream?

Coffee Crumble or Butterscotch

You will probably never eat...?

bugs

Your own signature dish…?

I have a few originals, but none that good yet. :)

What weird regional food have you eaten that would make most people gag?

vegemite, roasted kangaroo tail :)
